Before I even get into today’s post can I just show you what I had for breakfast yesterday?
I don’t know why, but whenever I eat something healthy I feel the need to instagram it. My user name is HollyJRockNRoll. Follow me.
But onto the races.
There’s nothing like a good 5k to force your ass to train with purpose. Last year I competed in Warrior Dash. Terrified that I’d embarrass myself in front of hundreds of strangers, I started strength training and working on my running endurance. This resulted in me not only finishing the race like a champ, but helped me to change my routine and fight plateaus.
5Ks have become extremely popular in the past decade and now they’re more than creative than ever. Here are my top picks.
What is it: A 3 mile race/walk where participants get sprayed with color as they pass certain meters.
Thing to Know: Wear white.
Price: $35-$50
What is it: An extreme 5k where you run through mud, climb obstacles and crawl through muddy pools. Oh, and you’re being chased by peeps dressed as the undead. Their goal is to grab the red flags you have attached to you, sort of like capture the flag. Your goal, of course, is to avoid them at all cost.
Things to know: Running on uneven and wet terrain isn’t easy, especially if you’re being chased. Train accordingly.
Price: Runners $67-$97; Zombies $35-$45
What is it: 3.1 miles of running and 25 obstacles, including a 50 foot water slide.
Things to know: While you wait to race you can listen to a live band or ride mechanical bulls!
Price: Free, if you volunteer or sign up 10 people.
What it is: Possibly the toughest extreme race out there. You’ll face fire, mud, dudes with batons trying to hit you, lifting HEAVY objects…you name it, they’ll make you do it.
Things to know: The race is VERY physically demanding. Do not attempt without serious training.
Price: $95-$195, depending on dates and times.
Have you done a 5k before? Planning on doing one this year? Tell me about it! Maybe I’ll see you at one.
